AbstractMost of the great British artists of the 20th century have at some time contributed illustrations for books - Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash, John Piper and David Hockney to name but a few. In addition there is a strong tradition of specialist illustrators - Edward Ardizzone and Lynton Lamb for example - whose talents complemented a wide variety of texts. The range of subject matter is enormous - from children's literature to war art, the humorous to the world of fantasy. A lengthy overview of the subject examines the revival of wood engraving, commercial art, book jackets, and children's book illustrations. Each dictionary entry consists of brief biographical details, followed by details of education (especially art schools attended), career and influences. For further reference, notes give titles, dates and publishers of books illustrated, exhibitions held, collections, and bibliographies.
